Presentation: Marketing Yourself Online

I made a presentation to Regina Cassell's Pub Tech class today about building a web portfolio, and the online marketing that goes along with it.

The keys to remember when making an online presence for yourself is to keep it professional, and use it once you've got it.

Why make an online portfolio?

It sounds like a lot of work, but creating an online portfolio to showcase your work is worth it:

  • Stand out from the crowd - everyone's got a resume and a folder with some printed materials. When you go in for an interview, you don't just tell your potential boss that you can write and take photos, you show them. So, don't just say, "Yeah, I can do video and web stuff," show them!
  • Market yourself - the big buzzword on the internet right now is personal branding. It boils down to this: be entreprenuerial in all aspects of your work. Promote yourself as an authority in some aspect of your work. Showcase your talent.
  • Build a network - Most people get hired at a given job because they know someone who knows someone. Get out there and connect with people that share your interests!
  • Job Security - Use your web presence to market yourself as an expert. Experts don't get fired! (UPDATE: Use Personal Branding for Job Security)

Each of these young journalists has a great web portfolio. Take a look at each of them, and when you're ready to build your own, check out the CMS links at the bottom of the page.

You can find a good example of a Blogofolio here. In addition, Andrew Roland, a Washburn senior, has invaluable information and examples about online blogs here. [...]

Thanks!

Thanks for the linkage! Don't forget WordPress on the CMS list -- Megan, Andrew, Anthony and I all use that for our blog/portfolio sites.
